Manual Cutters for Ceramic and Porcelain Tile
Sigma's Series 4 cutters (UP and NEX) work well for most everyday ceramic and porcelain tasks. The 24" NEX cuts up to about 24" on the diagonal, and the 24" UP and 37" NEX take the next step for larger-format floor tile. Thickness capacity is another factor. Most manual cutters by Sigma can cut materials ranging from 3mm glass mosaic to 20mm porcelain pavers, but before cutting anything thicker than you normally would, verify the specifications for your particular model.
Porcelain is denser and less porous than regular ceramic, so it takes more pressure to break clean. Sigma's scoring wheel geometry prevents chipping from hard glazes, and a bar breaks the score evenly along its entire length. Replacement wheels, such as the 14NT and 14UT, ensure that the cutting edge remains sharp far longer than the factory wheels will.
Large-Format Cutting and Handling Solutions
Large format tile and porcelain panels make things a whole new game. A 5-feet by 10-feet slab will not fit on a standard slab cutter and can weigh more than 100 pounds when thickness is added. For this category, Sigma designed the 8' cutter (Art. 12E2) and the 205cm XL model (Art. 12D1), both of which have longer rails that allow the panel to be fully extended during the score and break. Combined with either the Sigma Kera-Lift or Ergo Lift suction system, two people can move and position a large panel without cracking it or straining their backs.
Additional large-format tools include beveling and edge-finishing products and measuring tools. The swivel measurement bars (on the 3B, 3C, 3D, and 3E/3F series) allow you to repeat cuts without measuring all of the pieces, and the Jolly Edge shank and Kera-Cut kit can accommodate mitred edges on waterfall countertops and wrapped panel corners.
Replacement Parts and Accessories
A Sigma cutter has been designed to last and all parts are available to keep it operating: scoring wheels, floats rubber, suction cup rubber, handles, swivel bars, squares and carriage kits are all available from Tool Academy. When a wheel gets dull or a rubber pad wears down, replacing the one component will be much cheaper than purchasing a new machine and it is a matter of minutes.
How to Choose the Right Sigma Tile Tool
Start with the usual tile dimensions and thickness. A contractor who is cutting 12x24 porcelain on a daily basis requires a different machine than a contractor who is cutting mosaic sheets.
Next, think about jobsite mobility. A canvas bag with wheels (Art. 43E1) is a good choice for crews that work between sites weekly. A set-up of a fixed workbench is suitable for a shop that will process large size material onsite.
Last but not least, consider maintenance. After each job, wipe the rail and the scoring wheel, and make sure there is no grout dust on the wheel. Change the wheel as soon as it chips.
