Chalk Lines for Accurate Marking
Every straight cut and every framed wall start with one mark. A chalk line can do that quickly and accurately, and over a greater distance than a pencil or straightedge. For jobs where you need a reference line that stays visible without snapping a new one each time, a straight line laser level will do the job fine. But for quick, one-time marks on wood or concrete, nothing beats the speed of a chalk line.
Draw a straight line across a subfloor or drywall, and you have a quick and reliable straight line to work with for the rest of the project. The chalk line is one of the most basic and reliable tools that should be in every toolbox.
How Chalk Lines Work
A chalk line tool is a string wrapped around a spool housed in a container filled with powdered chalk. Stretch the string between two points. Raise it slightly off the surface and allow it to return to the surface. Whether you're cutting a line on plywood or laying out a line for a tile floor, the string leaves a straight, temporary mark where you need it.
The chalk is available in several grades. Regular chalk is used for normal marking on wood, drywall, and concrete. The Tajima Micro Chalk in our chalk collection is ultra-fine, which will create a thinner, more precise line for detailed layout work like cabinetry or trim. Permanent marking dye comes in red, blue, and black. It won’t wash off or brush off, which is important when you need a reference line for weeks on a job site.
Choosing the Right Chalk Lines and Reels
Make sure the tool comes in a well-sealing case that won't jam, as this wastes time and chalk. To keep your reel snapping clean lines, refill it before the chalk runs low. Otherwise, the chalk line will be thin and hard to read. If chalk accumulates around the exit hole, clean it off with a wipe and keep the reel in a dry place so that the chalk does not form lumps. Good chalk lines and reels will last for years and can be used over and over again, with proper care. Simply keep the chalk filled and the string in good condition.
