Tile Trowels for Precise Application

A tile trowel is designed to provide the correct amount of adhesive coverage, which is the key to every tile installation. It is used to apply thinset mortar or adhesive to a substrate in uniform ridges that dictate the amount of material under each tile and the ability of the tile to bed down. If the coverage is wrong, the risk of hollow spots, lippage, or movement of tiles prior to the set will be increased. If it's done correctly, you end up with a floor or wall that holds for decades.

A thinset trowel is not one tool; it is a group of tiling tools. This category includes flat trowels for skim coats, notched trowels for ridge patterns, margin trowels for tight corners and mixing, and specialty shapes such as bucket trowels and pool trowels for curved and wet area work. Concrete trowels are used for a different purpose than setting tile. They are used to finish concrete slabs, so it is as important to match the trowel to the concrete as it is to match it to the tile size.

Types of Trowels and Notch Sizes

The amount of adhesive that transfers to the tile back and the amount that remains on the substrate depends on the notch shape. Square notch trowels create clean, even ridges and are used for most floor and wall tile, from mosaics to regular ceramic tile. U-notch trowels create rounded ridges that collapse more evenly under pressure, making them ideal for softer-bodied tile and minimizing the chance of trapped air. V-notch trowels use less adhesive and provide better control, which is ideal for smaller tile and glass mosaics where excess adhesive can squeeze through the grout lines.

The depth of the notch increases with the size of the tile. A 1/4" x 1/4" square notch handles standard 12" x 12" ceramic tile. For large format porcelain or natural stone, which has an uneven back with more voids to fill, move up to 1/2" x 1/2". Too small notches starve the bond, too large notches waste material and add unnecessary weight.

How to Choose the Right Trowel

Match the size of the trowel with the tile size. Standard 12" to 18" tile requires a 1/4" square notch. Large format tile (18" and above) requires a 1/2" or larger notch, and sometimes back-buttering for complete coverage. Margin trowels are 5" to 8" and used for edges, corners, and mixing small amounts of thinset.

When applying adhesive to the trowel, hold the trowel at a steady angle of 45 degrees and always comb in the same direction so that ridges will collapse evenly under the tile. The stainless steel blades will not corrode and will stay sharper longer than carbon steel blades. The ergonomic handles will help to minimize hand fatigue on large jobs. Before each use, remove any wet mortar from the blade before it sets, rinse the blade, and dry it thoroughly.
