Saw Blades for Different Cutting Applications
Each time you cut wood, metal, masonry or tile, you need a different type of blade. A saw blade that cuts framing lumber dulls quickly when used to cut ceramic tile, and a diamond blade for cutting concrete will not cut clean edges on plywood. Carbide-tipped blades with an edge after repeated cutting are the ideal blades for cutting wood. Whether cutting sheet metal, rebar or stainless, the blades should be bi-metal or carbide, and rated to the thickness and hardness of the material being cut. Diamond blades for masonry and concrete are segmented for aggressive demolition cuts and continuous rim for smooth, chip-free edges on tile and stone. For granite and marble, you need finer diamond grits to avoid cracking in the middle of the cut.
Blade Types, Materials, and Compatible Saws
Circular saws can cut into wood, metal, and composite materials. The number of teeth affects cut quality. A 24-tooth blade cuts framing lumber at a faster rate, but produces a rougher edge. The 60+ tooth blade gives a smooth cut when used for trim and finish carpentry. Reciprocating saw blades are good for demolition projects and cutting through materials that contain nails, such as pipe and metal in small areas where a full-size saw cannot be used.
Jigsaw blades are used for cuts in wood, plastic and thin metal. The spacing between the teeth has an impact on both the speed and precision of the cut. The diamond blade comes in continuous rim, a continuous cutting edge, or segmented and turbo rim which have individual cutting edges. They are able to cut tile, porcelain, granite, and concrete; the bond and grit are matched to the material being cut.
Carbide-tipped blades stay sharp longer than standard steel blades and are suitable for cutting wood and many metals. Bi-metal blades are not prone to snapping when flexing, making them suitable for reciprocating and oscillating tools. High-speed steel blades are used for lighter cutting jobs with less severe materials and wear out faster with heavy use. The diamond blades last longer when cutting stone, concrete or tile than all three, as the diamond segments cut through the material and do not rip it.
How to Choose the Right Blade for Your Saw
The blade diameter should match the saw's specifications. If the blade is too big, it will not fit the guard correctly; if it's too small, it won't reach its full cutting depth. Arbor size is another important factor. Don’t order a blade for a saw before you find out the diameter and the size of its arbor hole. The manual will provide both details, so check it before buying a blade to cut any material with the saw.
The number of teeth and type of blade should match your objectives. Lighter teeth, faster cutting, but coarser. More teeth cut slower but cleaner. For fast demolition, use an aggressive segmented diamond blade or a low-tooth-count carbide blade. A high tooth-count blade gives you smooth edges and no splintering for finish work.
Blade Replacement and Safety Tips
Change the blade when it has chipped teeth, glaze or has lost its cutting speed. A dull blade requires more motor power and increases the risk of kickback. Do not install a blade until power is off. Always ensure the blade and arbor and washers are seated properly and spin each blade by hand to make sure it spins freely before cutting. Use eye and hearing protection. Do not put hands in the blade path for any cut.
