Selecting Accessories and Attachments by Material and Application

Fit the accessory to the material, not the material to the accessory. Diamond blades and diamond cup wheels cut stone and concrete without burning or clogging quickly. The Jolly Edge shank and Kera-Flex extensions from Sigma are designed for stone fabricators to create an edge that fits countertops and slabs.

Metal work calls for cutting and grinding blades, wire wheel brushes, and flap discs rated for steel and aluminum. A 4.5" flap disc and a knotted wire cup brush remove rust and paint without reaching bare metal and smooth welds as well. For wood and softer materials, a lighter grinding wheel or other specialty attachments, such as a mini Arbortech grinder, provide greater control without damaging the surface.

Backing pads are more important than they seem. A hook-and-loop backing pad holds sanding discs securely and evenly distributes them, extending the life of both the pad and the disc.

Diameter, Arbor Size, and Grinder Compatibility

Disc diameter and arbor size are the two numbers you should check first. Use a 4.5" grinder for 4.5" discs, and a 7" grinder for 7" discs, along with the corresponding flange and lock nut.

The arbor size must match the spindle thread, typically 5/8-11 for larger grinders. If you're not sure, an inner flange and lock nut kit (such as the 224GRND-KIT we stock) is an inexpensive way to confirm the wheel fits before ordering a full-price wheel.

Not all brands use the same grinder attachments. You can't mount a Metabo dust shroud on a Makita grinder without the proper adapter, and certain shank sizes apply to various stone tools, such as the Sigma series. Check the tool manufacturer, spindle thread, and disc diameter together. If two of three match but not all three, the part will not work, even if it appears as if it should.

Safety Tips for Grinder Attachments and Accessories

Check wheels/disks for cracks prior to each use. A hairline crack in a grinding wheel can fail under load, and this failure occurs quickly. When it comes to cutting concrete or stone, dust shrouds or dust collection covers are a must - airborne silica dust is no joke, and a dust shroud attached to a vacuum makes the work area safer. Always check the wheel's RPM rating to be sure it will operate at or below the maximum RPM of the grinder. Never install an oversized wheel without a guard.
