Lippage ruins good tile work. You can cut each piece exactly the same, and still have edges that are a bit higher or lower than adjacent pieces - that's where a tile leveling system comes in handy. The tile leveling tools ensure that the adjacent tiles are leveled at the same height as the thinset cures below, creating a flat, even surface.

How Tile Leveling Systems Work
The principle of a tile leveling system is very simple. You slide a base plate or clip under the edge of each tile, then insert a wedge or turn a cap to pull the tiles together and pin them flush. While the thinset is setting, the clip prevents the tiles from shifting or floating, keeping all of the joints level until the mortar locks it in place.
Most systems on the market fall into two categories. Wedge and clip systems, such as RLS by Raimondi, consist of a plastic base with a strap that is tightened by hand or with pliers. A screw and cap system, such as the T-Lock clips from Perfect Level Master, is a threaded post and cap that are turned to apply pressure. Both methods accomplish the same task. The difference is in the amount of force and the way in which you want to work the joint.
Choosing the Right Leveling System
The thickness of the clips will dictate your grout line, so be sure to buy the correct thickness before you purchase the tiles. Tool Academy stocks tile levelers in 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm sizes, and large clips designed for tile from 1/2" to 3/4" thick. The thinner tile and tight joints require the 1mm or 1.5mm clips. 2mm or 3mm spacing will work better with thicker porcelain and larger format tile, as it will allow the grout to flex.
Standard clip-and-wedge systems are intended for one-time use; the wedge part detaches after being knocked flat. There are also reusable systems that allow you to snap off the used part after the tile sets and reuse the base for the next job.
If you are working with large-format tile, you need extra-large or reinforced clips instead of standard-size clips. The larger the slab, the more stress each connection has to bear. And if the clips are too small, they may bend or slide out before the thinset sets.
Installation and Usage Tips
Set base plates under the joints of the tile in the direction of your layout. Place the next tile, and insert the strap or post into the slot. Push the wedge or cap into place so that the two tiles are level. Use a straight edge to check as you work instead of waiting until the row is finished.
Removal is straightforward. After the thinset has cured (typically 24-48 hours), tap the exposed area of the clip with a rubber mallet or use a leveling clip removal roller for larger areas. The base breaks clean at a designed break point, leaving the joint clean and ready for grout.
